Would you pay £9 for a sandwich? Food insecurity comes to the UK
The video from the Red Cross’ food security stall last week.
Can a veggie cohabit with a meat-lover, a fussy eater with a full on foodie?
I came to a decision a few years ago that the idea of finding the “perfect match” that shared all your likes and dislikes is somewhat ridiculous, and would probably be quite boring. The fun is in discovering new things together. Obviously it helps if you have at least some things in common, but I’ve come to the conclusion it’s far better to have a network of friends to match to different likes and pursuits than to try to find them all in the one person.
Although, given the constant presence of food in a shared home life I can see how that would be more important to many. My own boy is the anti-foodie, and hates as many foods as I love. I have previously considered that it would be easier if he shared my more adventurous tastes, but finding a happy compromise just requires some creative effort in the kitchen and gentle encouragement from me.
What do you think?
365 messes day 3: Spicy roasted sweet potato, cherry tomato, beluga lentils and goats cheese salad.
Used up the rest of the ready cooked Merchant Gourmet beluga lentils from day 1 today. They were really good actually, might have to buy them again.
The spicy roasted sweet potatoes and cherry tomatoes were left over from last night’s dinner. They’d been tossed, together with some quartered shallots, with 1/2tsp hot chilli powder and some olive oil then roasted for 15 minutes at fan 180C.
The goats cheese however was a mistake. It was leftover from the Tech’n’Taste event I attended a couple of weeks ago and was…slightly too ripe. Consequently it melted like an over-ripe brie covering everything in a goaty glue. If you like strong melty cheese you might have liked it, but it just wasn’t right for me and I didn’t finish the salad.
Might try this again though without the goats cheese. Maybe with some grilled prawns on top.
365 messes day 2: Pescadilla with guacamole, rice and salad from Casa Morita in Brixton.
Posting this up a bit late as I didn’t have time at during lunch today, then again it’s still lunch time somewhere.
One of the joys of working in Brixton is all the wonderful food that’s right on your doorstep. Casa Morita is new to the area, and a welcome addition. A little Mexican cafe nestled in Brixton market, with mixed and mismatched tables, folding chairs, and a wide open kitchen along the back wall. This is exactly the sort of place I love to eat.
Having previously tried and loved their tacos I decided to try something different this time and got the pescadilla meal to take back to my desk. The description on the menu read:
“Our special new addition to the menu, a lightly fried fish taco made “a la Mexicana” with tomato, onion, green chilli & parsley. Served with some salad, rice and guacamole on the side.” - £6.50
This was exactly what I got. The taco was delicious, flaked mackerel (I think) in a deeply flavoured and well spiced tomatoey sauce. I could easily have eaten five. Unfortunately I only had one. The guacamole was smooth, creamy and cooling, while salad was pretty ordinary, tomato, lettuce, and onion, lightly dressed, as was the plain white rice, although that’s not a complaint at all.
You can expect to see a number of future lunches from Casa Morita popping up in this project.
365 messes day 1: Roast beef, beluga lentil, fine green beans and tenderstem broccoli salad with a cassis dijon mustard dressing.
The beef was left over from a Monday night roast at home with the boy. The fine green beans and tenderstem broccoli were split of from a Sainsbury’s Taste the Difference stir-fry pack, the rest of which went into a noodle soup the night before (along with the rest of the leftover beef). They’d been cooked for three minutes in some Marigold vegetable stock, left to cool and cut into bitesized pieces (the stock also went into the soup). Some sliced red onions were also pinched from the stir-fry pack and finely chopped to add to the salad.
The lentils were supposed to be puy, but I was too lazy sleepy last night to cook them. Instead I used half a pack of Merchant Gourmet ready cooked beluga lentils from the Sainsbury’s near by.
The dressing was made using 1tbsp extra virgin olive oil with 1tsp cider vinegar and 1/2tsp of some wonderful Maille cassis Dijon mustard that I was given at a Maille pop up event back in May (and have yet to finish my post about…).
I ate this at my desk in the Livity offices in Brixton.
The idea for this came from the River Cottage Everyday book which includes a similar salad
I’ve been struggling to get any real posts up recently for a number of reasons (my dog ate my laptop?), so in the interests of putting something out there I’ve decided to start an easy little mini project.
For the next 365 days I’m going to post a picture of my lunch. The photos will be taken with my android and filtered to try to make them look presentable, but don’t expect art. I’ll be honest, this is more for my own self indulgence than for anything else, but it’ll be nice to be able to look back and see if there are any patterns or trends, and remember the little stories behind the meals.
I’ll be using the tag “365 messes” (how original, I know) and “lunch beyond sandwiches” for the better lunches, but it won’t just be the good ones that’ll be going up. The days when all I eat is toast or a cup-a-soup will be going up too. No shame.
I won’t be putting this on my main blog, so it’ll be Tumblr exclusive content (you lucky things), although I will probably post them up on Facebook and Twitter too, so it’s not that “exclusive” really.
Anyway…let’s lunch.
